We have rooms for Veteran's Day weekend!
It is Fall in the Foothills, why not come and enjoy wine, Fall colors and celebrate Veteran's Day at the Placerville Monument with us.
At 11 am the Monument will celebrate and honor all those who have served their county....some gave all, all gave some.
This is always a well attended and very moving event. As always, the American Legion will have the honor of putting the American Flags out along Highway 50 to remind motorists that freedom is not free and that our vets deserve thanks and respect.

Oakstone Winery destroyed by fire July 7th, 2012
For those who have been wondering about Oakstone Winery, here is the article that was in the Mountain Democrat
Oakstone: Fire destroys winery
Oakstone Winery in Fair Play was destroyed in a fire early in the morning of July 7.
The fire was reported at 4:05 a.m. and fire crews were on scene at 4:19 a.m., said Pioneer Fire Protection District Chief Robert Gill, who also acted as the incident commander.
“When we arrived, the facility was already 75 to 80 percent already involved,” he said. “So much was already on fire. We took a defensive (stance) to keep it confined.” There was no other exposure, he said, and no wildland caught fire.
The fire, which began on the south end of the facility and worked its way north, took between 20,000 and 25,000 gallons of water to put out, mostly shuttled in from a nearby mobile home park, Gill said.
By 5:57 a.m., the fire was out and an “extensive” mop-up phase began, Gill said. The winery had no smoke or heat detectors and had no sprinkler system. At 11:10 a.m., the operation was complete, he said.
“It was a multi-million dollar loss,” Gill said. “Luckily, it’s covered by insurance.” He said that John and Susan Smith, who have owned the winery since 1996 and opened it for tasting in 1997, are “going to rebuild” what they have lost.
El Dorado County Fire, Diamond Springs Fire, Amador Fire and Cal Fire also responded. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Rubicon Trail
Here is another cool thing to do, place to visit, etc. The Rubicon Trail is located in the High Sierra near Lake Tahoe. An extreme 4X4 rock crawling trail, the original Rubicon Trail route starts in Geogetown, heads over the Sierra and end in the Homewood area of Lake Tahoe.
From the website: "Also known as the McKinney-Rubicon Springs Road, The Rubicon Trail is located in the California High Sierra due west of Lake Tahoe & appx 80 miles east of Sacramento. Rated 10 as being "most difficult" on a scale of 1-10 & known as the "Granddaddy of all off highway trails" it is appx. 12 miles of incredibly scenic albeit ROCKY un-maintained El Dorado and Placer county road.
The ceremonial "Trailhead" is at Georgetown, which is a tiny hamlet nestled on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California's Gold Country . West of Tahoe, East of Sacramento, North of Yosemite National Park and south of I-80 and Donner Pass.
Ask ANYONE in Georgetown and they'll tell you how to get to the "actual" trailhead which is several miles east of town adjacent to Loon Lake.
Georgetown is synonymous with the Rubicon Trail. The town is built around servicing and supplying Rubicon adventurers and their rigs."
Please check the conditions and be careful out there!

Today’s inns and B&Bs offer all travelers elite status
Michelle Higgins, Practical Traveler columnist for the New York Times, wrote an interesting story about hotel frequent stay programs this week. Thanks to Amy at the Saratoga Arms for sharing this article with us. Entitled How to Attain Hotel Elite Status, the article outlined how frequent hotel goers who spend anywhere from 36 to 100 nights with certain brand hotels are more likely to get perks like free breakfasts, individualized concierge service, a break on the exorbitant wi-fi access or resort fees, and maybe if they’re very loyal a free bottle of water too! She went on to say however, “But let’s face it: Unless you are practically living in hotels, you are not going to see any of those benefits”. Hotel loyalty programs move aside. B&Bs are the better way to stay!
Hotel goers, forget the loyalty program that takes forever to qualify for and under delivers. Convert to the better way to stay and give inns and B&Bs a try.

Yep, Inns are better than hotels, resorts, etc.
Love this write up...it is stuff we have been saying for years about our inn and others....we really are a "better way to stay"... Great!
Posted: 20 Sep 2011 07:25 AM PDTBetterWayToStay.com | The more you pay for a hotel the less you get
I was amazed to read recently in an article on CNN.com entitled Internet Fee Irritates Hotel Guests, that three quarters of the “luxury” or upper scale hotel chains charge for Internet access, a fee that rubs travelers the wrong way. “It’s something that drives me and a lot of my clients relatively insane,” said Janice Hough, a travel agent who writes for the blog Consumer Traveler. According to the CNN story, Janice says “They feel nickled and dimed. They feel frustrated. If you’re paying $500 for a hotel room, you can probably afford $15 or $20 a day for the Internet. But it leaves a bad taste in people’s mouth.” Studies by BedandBreakfast.com and Professional Association of Innkeepers International have shown that more than 92% of inns and B&Bs in the United States offer free wi-fi access to guests. In fact, when coupled with complimentary breakfasts (often gourmet), free afternoon or evening refreshments, beverages, and parking, the amenities add up to as much as $150 per day savings at properties equivalent to the luxury hotels.
The CNN.com article goes on to explain that most travelers — business or otherwise — view Internet access in their room as essential to their stay as a comfortable bed to sleep in and a hot shower in the morning. In fact wireless Internet access is one of the top five “must-have” amenities for hotel guests, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study, also outlined on CNN.com.
Ironically, breakfast is in the same category as free wi-fi. The more you pay for the hotel room, the less likely you are to find breakfast included in your room rate. According to a secondCNN.com story entitled Appetite Grows for Free Hotel Breakfast, only 4 percent of the properties in the higher end hotel category offer a complimentary breakfast. “They have a restaurant, and they want you to pay for your breakfast,” said Daniel Mount, associate professor at Pennsylvania State University’s School of Hospitality Management to CNN. “And at places like that, I don’t think free breakfast is necessarily important.” Yet travelers who’ve heard from their Mom that breakfast is the most important meal of the day want that free breakfast and are willing to choose a lodging property that’ll offer it. When asked what they like most about inns and B&Bs in BedandBreakfast.com surveys, inngoers have consistently answered that the complimentary breakfast is among the top reasons they choose to stay at a B&B.
Recently, when staying in a boutique hotel (which will go unnamed) which did not offer a complimentary breakfast, the waitress asked if we’d prefer REAL maple syrup to imitation. Of course we answered we’d like the real maple syrup, only to find an additional $2 charge on the breakfast bill. This inngoer, accustomed to enjoying real maple syrup on my complimentary breakfast at every inn and B&B she travels to felt particularly nickeled and dimed there.
Yet it’s these added fees that have travelers rubbed the wrong way, and which have the same travelers looking to discover a better way to stay. According to a recent study by Peter Yesawich of the Y-Partnership, 79 percent of travelers are interested in visiting an inn or B&B in the upcoming year. They are looking for a better way to stay and they’re finding it when they visit inns or B&Bs.
We know we’re preaching the B&B advantages to the choir here. Help us to spread the word. Pass this on to your hotel-going friends and family who are looking for distinctive hospitality, delicious breakfasts and complimentary wi-fi, snacks and beverages when they travel. Show them the better way to stay is also the value way to stay.
Thanks.

F is for Fenton Herriott
One of my favorite books as a kid was All Creatures Great and Small about a vet by the name of James Herriott, but I digress. This El Dorado County Winery has our pal Debbie in the tasting room and this to say on their website.
"At Fenton Herriott Vineyards we have long held a great passion for wine, and it is for this reason that we chose to plant our vines amidst the steady sun and rich soil of Placerville, California. And while we are still a relatively new winery, we believe that our sincere appreciation for the noble grape is reflected in the complex yet infinitely drinkable wines that we create." So, if you are in the area, tell them the Albert Shafsky House gals said, Hello!

Placerville's Gold Bug Park
Heading out to one of our favorite spots this morning...Gold Bug Mine, right here in Placerville.
From their website: "As you enter the 352' drift of this historic hard rock mine, you will feel the cool air brush against your face.
Bring a picnic lunch. Take a relaxing hike. Check out the gold rush museum and tour the Hendy Stamp Mill. Visit Hattie's Gift shop for snacks and souvenirs.
Gold Bug Park promises to be a wonderful experience for you and your family." There are actually two mines to visit there....Gold Bug and the Priest Mine (by appt.) and a very cool stamp mill. "The Joshua Hendy Stamp Mill, is enclosed in a stamp mill building and provides a full explanation of the gold extraction process from the ore. The mill, on its original site, is easily viewed from various points in the building.
A working scale model graphically demonstrates the ore reduction process.
The mill is patterned after a design by Joshua Hendy Ironworks of Sunnyvale, CA. Hendy was a prominent iron worker in San Francisco CA, creating artistic ironwork balcony railings and street lamp fixtures. When the 1906 earthquake hit San Francisco, he moved his business down to Sunnyvale where the old factory remains along the railroad track. Hendy Iron Works was purchased by Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1947."

Where the paved road ends, the adventure begins. This Sunday, December 6, we dedicate our entire episode to the historic Rubicon Trail located in the El Dorado National Forest. Come ride with us through the rocky crags and remote canyons of this twenty-two mile off-road trail, climbing from 5400 to 7000 feet in elevation. It didn’t take a whole lot of those miles for our crew to discover why the historic Rubicon Trail is known as one of the most rugged 4-wheel drive trails in the world.
Georgetown is the jump-off point for Experience El Dorado as the crew embarks on a harrowing dirt road journey through the spectacular Sierra Nevada mountains. For three days they record the fun and thrills that 4-wheeling offers here in the foothills. Field Correspondent, Cory Tapia joins Jeep® Jamboree USA on a wild ride that many 4-wheelers deem pure rock-crawling pleasure.
Not only will armchair trekkers enjoy the adventure, the episode will showcase another amazing recreational opportunity right in our own backyard.

Facebook is not just for kids anymore
Oh the irony....I spoke at the California Association of Bed and Breakfast Inns (CABBI) about Facebook and social networking and how it was starting to be used by people older than college students and in today's Sacramento Bee there was a great article about the same thing. Of course we have had an account for the Placerville bed and breakfast for some time now...and I will say it has been great fun to add various Shafsky family members as "friends" of the El Dorado County Bed and Breakfast that we love so much.
